BOOKS - MEAM LOEZ

“It makes you feel like becoming a better Jew”

The first book I would recommend for beginners is Meam Loez. Meam Loez is a Sephardic classic, an anthology of the commentaries, Midrashim and Talmudic stories around the Perasha of the week and the whole Tanach. The current English edition, translated by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan, consists on 43 volumes. Meam Loez was originally written in ladino by Rabbi Yaakob Kholi (one of my ancestors from my mother’s side) and after his death by Rabbi Ytzchak Magriso and other Rabbis from Turkey.

I would suggest starting from the books on the Chumash, following the Perasha of the week.

For more information about Meam Loez and rabbi Yaakob Kholi go to the following article written by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan himself.

BOOKS - PIRKE AVOT

Pirke Avot / Ethics of the Fathers is a tractate of the Mishna composed of ethical maxims of the Rabbis of the Mishnaic period. It is the second-last tractate in the Mishnaic order Nezikin.

The tractate consists of six chapters. It begins with an order of transmission of the tradition from Moses receiving the Torah at Sinai who then transmits it, through various generations, to the Rabbis (Avot 1:1). Pirke Avot contains sayings attributed to sages from Simon the Just (3rd century B.C.E.) to Judah haNasi (3rd century C.E.), redactor of the Mishnah. These aphorisms concern proper ethical and social conduct, as well as the importance of Torah study.

BOOKS - PIRKE AVOT OF MEAM LOEZ

There is a Pirke Avot volume in the collection Meam Loez, which would also be my first recommendation.
